What is Myers Briggs?
MBTI explains basic patterns in human functioning and is used for a variety of purposes, including the following:
• Self-understanding and development
• Problem solving
• Relationship counselling
• Mediation
• Career development and exploration
• Organisation development
• Team building
• Management & leadership training
• Training in diversity and multicultural awareness
Using MBTI gives individuals and teams the opportunity to see their natural strengths and also potential areas for growth. It also helps the individual or team, if they are in conflict with others, to appreciate people who differ from you.
At the very least, MBTI gives us insight into ourselves and helps us to recognise strengths and potential stressors.
How do CW Associates use Myers Briggs?
The Myers Briggs questionnaire is set, marked and then each member of the team is provided with an individual feedback session on their type. This is followed up by a bespoke away day/team event/change management/leadership programmes or mediation for the team or individuals. The outcomes are agreed before the design and are generally around the themes of working even more cohesively and effectively and truly understanding colleagues/team members.
Using the MBTI instrument also provides a forum for reflecting on how team members and leaders interact, helping their ability to communicate successfully, to handle conflict and change and to implement more inclusive problem-solving techniques.
The Myers Briggs instrument can be used very successfully to help people understand how to communicate constructively with different people and to develop their own style of influencing and persuading others.
MBTI is highly recommended for leadership development as it enables the individual to understand the distinctive ways in which they express their personality and the implications of this for their development as effective leaders.
